Tap. Tap. Tap.

Brody jumped at the wrapping against the passenger side window, his hand going to his hip before he realized he wasn’t armed.

Years of habit. Hard to shake.

Looking out the window he saw the little older lady he’d met helping decorate the streetlights. What was her name? Harriett.

She motioned at the door and he pushed the unlock button.

Cold air rushed in when she opened the door. He expected her to climb inside. Instead she shoved a sleeping bag at him.

“If you’re going to sleep out here, don’t freeze to death. We don’t have time for dead bodies this weekend.” She handed him a thermos. “Hot chocolate.”

“You’re not calling the sheriff on me?” he asked taking the thermos. The heat of it warmed his hands.

“Other than freezing to death, you planning anything else stupid tonight?”

The little woman didn’t pull any punches with her words.

“No, ma’am.”

“Then I won’t be informing the law on one condition.”

He hesitated. There was a catch. In all his years in the military and growing up in foster homes, he’d learned one thing. Nothing was ever free. If someone did something nice for you, there was always a cost.

“What’s the condition?”

“You come to the clinic first thing in the morning to talk with Doc Clint.”

He thrust the thermos back her direction. “Can’t do it.”

“Can’t or won’t?” she asked, peering in at him in the car’s dim overhead light.

“Can’t. Have to go to work.”

“Work where?”

“Electrician guy, Noel Fisher wants me to help with a job. Have to meet him at the café at eight.”

She thrust the thermos back his way. “Good. You be at the clinic at seven to see the doc. And bring back my thermos.”

“He has office hours that early?” he asked, surprised. Most doctors he’d been to see since coming back to the states all seemed to start their hours at nine or later.

“He will tomorrow.”

Before Brody could ask her any more questions or thank her for the sleeping bag and hot chocolate, she slammed the door shut and disappeared down the alley.

Shaking his head, he opened the thermos and poured himself some of the delicious smelling liquid. He’d driven into town, his old sedan on fumes and stopped for dinner at the diner last week. Since then, he’d met some odd characters in this town. But no one seemed threatening. Well, maybe Harriett, but he was twice her size, so he was pretty sure he could take her if he had to.

He unfurled the sleeping bag and pulled it over his legs and body, then set the driver’s seat back to stretch out a bit as he drank the chocolate.

Today hadn’t been as bad as he’d thought when he’d woken up. Not only had Noel hired him to help with the electrical job tomorrow, he’d given him all four sandwiches from the butcher shop, then paid him for helping load up the electrical equipment at the hardware store. He’d decided to pocket that money for tonight, since the next night was supposed to be
